Patron It Forward

I am a firm believer that value comes in a variety of forms, far many more than dollar bill currency. While I have financial commitments of my own to make good on, I try to avoid money coming between a person and their superhero skin whenever possible.

Early in my clothes-making years, I hung a sign up at a show reading “pay what you can afford.” A young woman literally emptied her pockets, lint and all, pouring handfuls of coins into my cupped hands. She tearfully repeated “Really?” in shock that she could actually buy something that she loved. A few years later I was doing a show in a packed underground club in SF when a woman tried on a piece that was simply made for her! She danced around giddily while her friends reached through the crowd to hand me random bills. Unbeknownst to me, she was unable to afford it, but through the collaborative contributions of her friends and myself, we made it happen.

These are the magic moments of connection and community.
This is why I do what I do.

“Patron it Forward” is my effort to recreate this community in an online format. Patron membership fees will be matched by me to cover the cost of a special piece for a deserving Benny (beneficiary). In addition to some standard “vip perks,” Patrons will also hear directly from our Bennies…and get to celebrate them in their full glorious superhero skin!
